A Call To Action

From The Desk Of KC Jackson

The music industry has always been a vibrant tapestry of creativity, passion, and artistic expression. Behind the glitz and glamour of the stage lights and the applause of cheering crowds are the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to ensure that every performance is a success. Among these individuals are roadies of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ+ communities who have historically faced significant barriers to entry and advancement in this industry. However, in recent years, we have witnessed remarkable progress and a growing movement advocating for inclusivity and representation.

The journey of roadies from diverse backgrounds has been one of resilience and determination. For too long, the behind-the-scenes workforce in the music industry has been predominantly male and white, leaving many talented individuals marginalized. But thanks to the efforts of countless advocates, the landscape is slowly changing.

Women are breaking through the sound barriers, taking on roles as sound engineers, lighting designers, stage managers, and more. Roadies of color are bringing fresh perspectives and diverse narratives to the forefront, enriching the industry with their unique experiences. Furthermore, members of the LGBTQ+ community are standing tall, claiming their space and challenging the stereotypes that have long sidelined them.

Organizations and initiatives focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have emerged, providing mentorship, training, and support for those seeking to break into the industry. These efforts have not only empowered individuals but have also made the industry as a whole wiser, more innovative, and ultimately better.

However, as we celebrate these achievements, we must also acknowledge the threats that remain. The commitment to DEI is currently under attack, with many overlooking the importance of these initiatives in creating a more vibrant and equitable industry. If we choose to remain silent now, we risk losing the hard-won progress that has been achieved.

When diverse voices are excluded, we all lose. The music we create is a reflection of our collective experiences, and the absence of diverse perspectives stifles creativity, innovation, and authenticity. We must remember that a richer industry is one that embraces all voices, ensuring that every roadie, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to contribute.

Now more than ever, it is crucial for those of us who believe in equality and representation to unite. We must stand up and speak out, not just for ourselves but for future generations who aspire to follow in our footsteps. Our experiences, struggles, and triumphs are intertwined; when one of us rises, we all rise.

Let us harness the power of our collective voices to advocate for change within the industry. Support organizations that champion DEI, mentor those who are just starting out, and challenge discriminatory practices that hinder progress. By standing together, we can show the world that we can all do better together.

As we reflect on how far roadies of color, women, and LGBTQ+ communities have come in the behind-the-scenes music industry, let us also commit to pushing for further advancements. The fight for equity and inclusivity is ongoing, and it is up to us to ensure that the music industry truly represents the beautiful diversity of our society. Let’s continue to stand up, speak out, and unite for a brighter, more inclusive future in music. After all, together, we create the soundtrack of change.
